Are HO scale model trains right for me?

HO Scale Model TrainsConsider a few factors to determine which proportion best fits your personal needs. "Scale" refers to the proportion of a model in relation to its life-size counterpart; for example, a 1:22.5 model locomotive is 22.5 times smaller than the actual locomotive. Space and budget are probably the two biggest considerations. If you're purchasing for a child, think bigger. Some train scales, such as Z, are so impossibly small they'd be easy to swallow. (You'll be amazed that they actually fit motors into these infinitesimal Z-scale locomotives!) HO scale model trains, are appropriate for children over eight. At 1/87th actual size, this is the most popular train size, so there's a multitude of options available at reasonable prices. Younger children might do better with larger scales like O (1:48) or S (1:64). In large sets like these, the train is going to dominate over the scenery, which is great because you can't expect children to be too enthralled with landscaping. The notable exception is that children of all ages love setups with tunnels!

Downsize with N scale model trains

N Scale Model TrainsN scale model trains are a close second in popularity, with a proportion of 1:160. Their smaller size makes them more convenient when space is an issue. Also, it's easier to run longer tracks in less space and build in more scenery. The only scale smaller than N scale model trains is Z. Because it's smaller and more detailed, you can expect to pay a bit more for N-scale equipment than HO scale model trains and equipment.
