In 1954 Bill Vukovich won his second straight Indy 500® in a Kurtis Kraft roadster that had given him trouble for a month. He finally qualified on the third day with a disappointing 19th and had to fight his way to the lead. Once he took the lead at the 375 mile point, no one ever caught him, and he finished the race with a record-breaking speed of 130.84 mph to join Wilbur Shaw and mauri Rose as the only drivers to win the Indy 500® two years in a row. Several drivers retired after the race, with one saying that "It's no fun anymore. It's too business-like and they're going too fast."
